Wolhobby yarn calculator

Enter your pattern per colour and calculate the number of skeins.

1

What does the pattern say?

Pattern information

Copy what the designer or yarn label states

Enter what the pattern and yarn label say. You can choose metric or US/UK units per field.

Yardage, weight and metres explained

You do not need to convert anything: choose the unit shown in the pattern or on the label for each field. The calculator converts internally and shows the result in both systems.

Gauge in the pattern

If the pattern gives a gauge, enter it here and use “Measured over” to choose whether it is given per 10 cm or per 4 inches.

Amount per colour

For one colour you enter one line. For colourwork, extra colour lines appear. Each colour is converted and rounded up separately.

Please note: rounding is done per colour. Two half skeins in different colours become two separate skeins, not one combined skein.

2

Are you changing anything from the pattern?

Only select these if your project differs from what the pattern already includes. Leave empty if you follow the pattern.

When should you use these choices?

If the pattern already gives metres or yards per colour, the object type and stitch pattern are normally already included. Use these choices only for changes such as adding or removing sleeves, extra length or a higher collar.

Your swatch and preferences

Personal information

This is about how you knit

These details are linked to your own knitting style: your swatch, the needle size you want to use, the desired fit and the safety margin. This allows the calculator to adjust the pattern advice to your situation.

Why is a swatch important?

Gauge is often the biggest reason for different yarn usage. Needle size affects your swatch, but when you enter your swatch, that effect is already included in the measured gauge. The calculator therefore does not correct twice for both needle size and swatch.

Your swatch

Enter your own swatch result and use “Measured over” to choose whether you measured it per 10 cm or per 4 inches.

Your preferences

Use this for personal choices that may influence yarn usage.

Yarn calculator disclaimer

The Wolhobby yarn calculator provides a carefully calculated recommendation based on the information you enter, such as the pattern, yardage, weight, needle size, gauge, selected Wolhobby yarns and safety margin.

Actual yarn usage may differ due to your personal knitting style, a different gauge, pattern modifications, cables, texture stitches, colourwork, length changes, washing, blocking or differences between yarns.

We recommend purchasing enough yarn for the complete project in one order. Hand-dyed yarns can differ slightly between dye batches. When in doubt between two quantities, choose the higher number.

No rights can be derived from the outcome of the calculator. Wolhobby is not liable for different yarn usage or additional costs if a project requires more or less yarn than calculated.
